An orofacial myofunctional disorder occurs when an abnormal lip, jaw, or tongue position is present during rest, swallowing, or speech. Problems that result from OMDs may include pain in the face and neck, poor sleep due to breathing difficulties, or ongoing issues after dental surgery or orthodontic work.
The objective of Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy (OMT) is to promote optimal oral rest posture, characterized by the tongue resting on the roof of the mouth, teeth slightly parted, and lips sealed, accompanied by nasal breathing. This posture is recommended for all situations except during eating, drinking, or speaking.
Feeding Therapy starts with a comprehensive feeding and oral-motor evaluation. We look at the whole child when assessing and developing treatment plans. We do not use one approach, rather we take in individualized approach uses many different strategies.
Speech Therapy is the assessment and treatment of communication problems and speech disorders. It is performed by speech-language pathologists (SLPs).
Speech therapy techniques are used to improve communication. These include articulation therapy, language intervention activities, and others depending on the type of speech or language disorder.
Thumb sucking is can be a common habit among young children, but it can cause many negative implications on children’s health. Extended thumb sucking usage can impact a child’s airway, dentition, feeding skills, and sleep.
We offer a thumb sucking elimination program starting at age 4! It's important to note that every child is different, and what works for one child may not work for another. However, a fun and positive remediation program can be a helpful tool for children in breaking the habit of thumb sucking.
Breaking a habit takes time and patience, so it's important to be supportive and understanding throughout the process. It's also important to address any underlying issues that may be causing the thumb sucking, such as an orofacial myofunctional disorder. With the right tools and encouragement, your child can successfully overcome their thumb sucking habit and enjoy improved oral health and overall wellbeing.
